College of Engineering Distinguished Speaker Series: Engineering Standards – A Check on Fools and Rascals

Jan

3:30 pm

Anthony E. Fiorato, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and executive director of the Slag Cement Association, will present “Engineering Standards – A Check on Fools and Rascals” on Monday, January 23, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the McArthur Engineering Annex, Room MEA202.

In the 1930s Hardy Cross, then a professor of civil engineering at the University of Illinois, wrote, “Standardization, as a check on fools and rascals or set up as an intellectual assembly line, has served well in the engineering world.” These words are relevant today. In engineering, standards govern the design and construction of our built environment and essentially define a standard of care to protect public health and safety. Standardization is intended to provide clear criteria for defining materials, design criteria, manufacturing and construction practices, and test methods. It is used to establish an unambiguous basis for acceptance. This talk will address U.S. practices for standardization, which are based on a voluntary consensus system that is somewhat unique in the world. The focus will be on design and construction standards, building codes, materials specifications, and test methods. The emphasis will be on the importance of “intelligent standards” as opposed to “standardized intelligence.”
