Support the Debbie School’s Scholastic Book Fair from Wednesday through Friday, May 13 to 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the breezeway between the Mailman Center for Child Development and the Debbie School. All proceeds from the event benefits the Debbie School, part of the Mailman Center for Child Development focusing on early intervention research, training, and service. For more than 30 years, the Mailman Center has conducted research on problems impacting children with special needs, provided early intervention services for children and their families, and provided training for university students interested in careers in special education, speech-language pathology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and social work.

The National Association of Cuban-American Educators (NACAE) and The Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies present a photography exhibit featuring photos by Federico R. Justiniani, a past president of NACAE and an internist and professor of medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center at the Miller School of Medicine. The exhibit, titled ”People of the World: Faces and Occupations,” portray the uniqueness of the human race and the power of observation developed by an astute clinician. Justiniani has developed a second career as a professional photographer and traveled extensively capturing a collection of photographs of people and their occupations. What may have seemed like science fiction–surgery without an incision–is now a reality that is making lives better for patients suffering from chronic acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Jose Martinez, surgeon and co-director of laparoscopic surgery, bariatric surgery, and surgical endoscopy at the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery at the Miller School of Medicine is the first in Miami to offer the TIF (transoral incisionless fundoplication) procedure for the treatment of GERD.

Spring has returned and nature beckons discovery and exploration—even in art form. The annual two-part UM Student/Master of Fine Arts Exhibitions are viewable at the Lowe Art Museum. Also on view: UM’s Faculty Exhibition, featuring Carsten Meier’s Naturell. A preview and reception for the juried student exhibition and Naturell will be held Friday, April 17 from 7 to 10 p.m. The evening will be highlighted with a special lecture by Meier. A preview reception for the MFA exhibition, on view from May 14-June 14, will be held Wednesday, May 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. Both receptions are free and open to the public.
