Retaining the same masterful control over mood and atmosphere that he has displayed throughout his career, director Kiyoshi Kurosawa infuses this family drama with an underlying tension that permeates the film even during its most humorous moments. The story concerns a Japanese businessman, husband, and father of two, who unexpectedly loses his job. Unable to break the news to his devoted wife, he dresses up every morning and pretends to go to work, wasting the days away with a former classmate who is also unemployed. Although they aren’t aware of his contradictory behavior, his family begins to disobey him nonetheless. His teenage son enlists in the Army in order to fight for the United States, while his adolescent son goes behind his back to take piano lessons. The longer his charade goes on, the less control he has as patriarch, creating an even deeper divide between him and his family. Admission is $6 for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and is free for students. General admission is $8. The film screens on Friday, May 22 at 9 p.m., Saturday, May 23 at 2 and 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, May 24 at 3:30 and 8 p.m. For more information visit www.cosfordcinema.com.

Thuy, a scrappy 10-year-old who lives on the outskirts of Saigon, has no choice in life but to work in her uncle’s bamboo factory–that is, until she packs her bags to run away to the city, where she becomes a street vendor to survive. Lan, a flight attendant, arrives at Ho Chi Minh airport on a five-day layover, checking into the same family-run hotel every week while she carries on a secret affair with an airline pilot. Hai, a zookeeper living in a shack on the park grounds, is nursing a broken heart since his fiancé left him and dotes on the zoo’s elephant, which is about to be shipped off to an Indian zoo. In four days, the young runaway will play matchmaker to these lonely hearts in hopes of forming a surrogate family.
