Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in this country. More than one million people in the U.S. develop skin cancer each year. Take advantage of your free cancer screening, and also learn the facts about skin cancer prevention and some of the steps you can take to help decrease the incidence of skin cancer. Your health should always be your first priority. If you are a member of the UM/Aetna medical plan, you get one free physical per calendar year via your UMatter preventive care benefits. In 2008, about 49 percent of members took advantage of this benefit. It is important to get periodic evaluations to detect diseases and conditions early before they cause symptoms or major damage. Also, scheduling your annual physical allows you to build a relationship with your doctor so you can discuss your personal health habits and plan for prevention of chronic illnesses.
Remember, preventive services include an age- and gender-appropriate history and exam, counseling and guidance, risk factor reduction, immunizations, and appropriate preventive screening tests based on age and gender. It does not include evaluation and management of abnormalities encountered or preexisting problems that require follow-up and management.
If you have not already scheduled your free annual physical, contact your physician today. If you would like to schedule an appointment with a UHealth Primary Care Physician, call the UM-employee dedicated appointment line at 305-243-CARE. To view a list of UHealth PCPs, click here.
