UM to celebrate A Week of Cuban Culture

The University of Miami student organization Federación de Estudiantes Cubanos will present “A Week of Cuban Culture” from March 6-12. Events will range from the José Martí Day of Service and an award ceremony for prominent Cuban leaders to a discussion about Cuban religious beliefs and The Cuban Carnival: An Explosion of Flavor, where artists, vendors, and others will showcase their work.

The FEC is a nonprofit organization at the University of Miami that promotes the many aspects of the rich Cuban culture to the UM community and the community at large by creating educational and exciting programs. All events are free and open to the public.

Saturday, March 6 at 9 a.m. on the Edward T. Foote II University Green – José Martí Day of Service. Participate in FEC’s community service event along with youth from the surrounding community centers in a day filled with fun activities.

Monday, March 8 at 12 p.m. at The Rock – Opening Ceremonies. Join FEC as they welcome prominent Cuban leaders and award them recognition for their contributions to the community. The FEC will present the YUCA (Young Urban Cuban American) awards this year during the opening ceremony to the following recipients: keynote speaker Eneida Roldan, president and CEO of Jackson Health System; Rudy Fernandez, vice president of government affairs at the University of Miami; and Alfredo Mesa, vice president of Dutko World Wide.

7 p.m. at The Rock – Dominoes Tournament. Join the fun and compete against some FEC’ers and co-sponsoring organizations.

Tuesday, March 9 at 12 p.m. on The Patio – Azúcar: Sweets of Cuba. Try an array of traditional Cuban desserts you won’t want to miss.

12 p.m. on The Patio – La Moda: A Cuban Fashion Show. Visit FEC’s first fashion show to see prominent student leaders strut their stuff.

5 p.m. in the Hecht/Stanford Dining Hall – Taste of Cuba. Come out to the dining halls as FEC brings culture and delicious cuisine to all residents on campus.

Wednesday, March 10 at 12 p.m. at The Rock – Discover Cuba: A Taste of our Culture. Watch a chef prepare the traditional Cuban entrée, arroz con pollo. Also, enjoy an array of activities, including a photo op with Sebastian the Ibis dressed in Cuban attire.

5 p.m. in the Hecht/Stanford Dining Hall – Taste of Cuba. Come out to the dining halls and enjoy delicious Cuban cuisine.

Thursday, March 11 at 12 p.m. on The Patio – The Cuban Carnival: An Explosion of Flavor. Cuban Carnival is the culmination of A Week of Cuban Culture. Various artists, jewelry/memorabilia vendors, and others will showcase their work, and in conjunction with Patio Jams, a Latin band will play the rhythms of Havana.

6 p.m. at the Cuban Heritage Collection – World View, the Orichas and Santeria. Join FEC at the Cuban Heritage Collection on the second floor of the Richter Library for a discussion about Cuban religious beliefs and their importance in Miami.

Friday, March at 12 p.m. in the Lowe Art Museum – Cuba Avant-Garde Exhibit. Join FEC on a visit to the Lowe Art Museum and experience contemporary Cuban art from artists both in Cuba and abroad.
