Cosford Screening: ‘Bullhead’

A 2012 Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film, Bullhead is one of the most original crime films in recent memory. Belgian helmer Michael R. Roskam’s debut film is fueled by tension, dread, and mystery. A criminal world, full of gangsters and opportunists, Bullhead examines the corrupt Belgian beef industry and discovers some unsavory people and deeds. Bullhead focuses on domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Matthias Schoenaerts), who initiates a shady deal with a notorious Mafioso meat trader. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his traumatic past resurfaces, Jacky must confront his demons and face the far-reaching consequences of his decisions. In Belgian and French with English subtitles.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich to Give Free Lecture

The Frost School of Music presents composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich as part of the 2011-2012 Stamps Family Distinguished Visitors Series. Zwilich will conduct a free lecture and a Q&A session followed by a student performance of chamber works on Friday, March 2 at 8 p.m. at Maurice Gusman Concert Hall on the Coral Gables campus. The Frost Symphony Orchestra will perform her works on Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m. at Maurice Gusman Concert Hall. Tickets for the concert range from $10 to $15 and are free for UM students with a valid ’Cane Card.

Zwilich is a Pulitzer Prize-winning and multi-Grammy-nominated composer. She is currently the Francis Eppes Professor at Florida State University’s School of Music. Her easily identifiable music is widely performed and recorded by leading orchestras and chamber ensembles around the world. Her distinct sound is known for its happy tone of “technical excellence” that appeals to mixed audiences.

The Stamps Family Charitable Foundation Distinguished Visitors Series was established in 2003 through the extraordinary vision and generous commitment of Roe and Penny Stamps. The annual series brings an array of significant artists, scholars, and music industry leaders to the Frost School for the educational and artistic enrichment of its students as well as the community.
