Architecture of Havana’s Art Schools

University of Miami Cuban Culture on the Edge has teamed with Miami Dade College’s Miami International Film Festival to present a seminar on Havana’s art schools based on the screening of the documentary Unfinished Spaces. The seminar will be held Sunday, March 4 at 4 p.m. at the Freedom Tower in Miami. Organized by Lillian Manzor and moderated by Professor Jean Francois LeJeune, this panel brings together directors Alysa Nahmias and Benjamin Murray from New York to discuss how Unfinished Spaces was made and what it means for Americans to shoot a film in Cuba. Roberto Gottardi from Havana will discuss his experiences as an architect in Cuba during the early years of the revolution and his plans for the school of drama. Eberto García Abreu represents the theater arts program in Havana’s University of the Arts School and will detail the challenges of working in one of the “unfinished spaces.” Visual artist Felipe Dulzaides will share his experiences studying and creating at the school. For more information, click here.

Cosford Screening: ‘Pater’

France’s most unpredictable filmmaker, Alain Cavalier, teams up with actor Vincent Lindon for a witty, semi-improvised look at men, power, and politics. The film, which stars Cavalier himself as a fictional French president and Lindon as his newly appointed prime minister, will be followed by a Q&A with Lindon. In French with English subtitles. Cosford Screening: ‘Bullhead’

A 2012 Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film, Bullhead is one of the most original crime films in recent memory. Belgian helmer Michael R. Roskam’s debut film is fueled by tension, dread, and mystery. A criminal world, full of gangsters and opportunists, Bullhead examines the corrupt Belgian beef industry and discovers some unsavory people and deeds. Bullhead focuses on domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Matthias Schoenaerts), who initiates a shady deal with a notorious Mafioso meat trader. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his traumatic past resurfaces, Jacky must confront his demons and face the far-reaching consequences of his decisions. In Belgian and French with English subtitles.
