Put a Personal ‘Spin’ on Cancer Awareness and Help Raise Funds for Sylvester

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center will be the beneficiary of the “I Spin for ______ Challenge” spin-a-thon on Saturday, March 10 at the Spa at Viceroy, 465 Brickell Avenue, Miami. Spinning classes will start at 8 a.m. and will be offered every hour until 6 p.m. Participants are encouraged to fill in the blank by dedicating their ride to someone who has been diagnosed with or lost their life to cancer.

A $50 minimum donation is suggested. The name of each person being honored will be listed on the donation. Participants also are encouraged to get friends, family and colleagues to donate toward their ride. Top fundraisers will have a chance to win prizes from generous event sponsors, including a six-month gym membership and spa package to the Spa at Viceroy, a La Lucca-designed handbag, and an original ceramic piece by Ceramics by Mayita.

Additional sponsors include Aaron’s Catering Company and Vita Coco Water, which will provide food and water during and after the event. For more information, email Andi Dyal at [email protected].

Working in a Team Environment

This course is designed to give you the necessary knowledge and tools to work effectively in a team environment. You will identify the elements of a high-performing team and learn to stimulate innovative thinking and collaboration when working on group projects. In addition, you will learn to delegate tasks effectively within your team and evaluate yourself in a team environment. The course will be held on Tuesday, March 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Dominion Tower, Room 155, on the Miller School campus. Register through ULearn. Please note that the prerequisite CBL (online module) with the same title must be completed prior to registering to the live session.

Peer Coaching

This course, offered through the Professional Development and Training Program in partnership with the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program), is designed for emerging leaders who want to learn the basics for and skills associated with peer coaching. The course will teach participants how to define coaching and distinguish it from supervision. Participants also will learn how to distinguish between criticism and feedback and will be given the opportunity to provide feedback to colleagues. The course will be held on Tuesday, March 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Dominion Tower on the Miller School of Medicine campus. Register through ULearn.

A Week of Cuban Culture Gets Under Way at UM

The UM student organization Federación de Estudiantes Cubanos (FEC) is hosting “A Week of Cuban Culture” through Friday, March 9. Events will include:

Monday, March 5: Opening Ceremonies: La Isla del Son 
This event begins at 12 p.m. at the University Center Rock. Ceremonies include opening speeches. Cuban food will be served.

Tuesday, March 6 – Azucar: A Legacy Never Forgotten  
This event will be held on Tuesday, March 6 at 12 p.m. on the University Center Patio and will provide the campus with a taste of the different desserts that the Cuban culture has to offer, while celebrating the music of Celia Cruz.

Wednesday, March 7 – Discover Cuba: A Taste of our Culture “Discover Cuba” will occur at 12pm at the University Center’s central location, the Rock. A variety of stations will promote and exhibit the Cuban culture, along with a cooking demonstration of signature dish “arroz con pollo” and more.

Thursday, March 8 – The Cuban Carnival
 The week’s largest event, the Cuban Carnival will be held Thursday, March 8 at 12 p.m. on the University Center Patio. The Carnival is an explosion of Cuban flavor through a series of different activities. Various vendors from the local Miami community will display Cuban art and artifacts. At 12:30 p.m. a fashion show sponsored by La Guayabera Lady and emceed by El Zol 95.7 radio station will begin. Live music will be provided by Hurricane Productions: Patio Jams.

Friday, March 9 – CHC Presents: Pedro Pan Event
 The week’s final event explores the Pedro Pan Exodus in Cuba. The Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) will host FEC members and all interested in learning about this aspect of Cuban history. The event will begin at 12 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the Richter Library at the CHC.

UM to Host World Kidney Day Awareness Event

The University of Miami will host a World Kidney Day awareness event on Thursday, March 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Herbert Wellness Center Atrium on the Coral Gables campus. The event will feature an educational health fair, organ donation registration, health screenings, keynote speakers, interactive informational displays, free mini smoothies and snacks, and free giveaways.

Several organ recipients and people impacted by organ donation will be in attendance to share their personal stories. Speakers will include Jill Morton, a graduate of UM’s School of Business Administration. Morton’s story has been featured in articles in the University of Miami alumni publication, Miami magazine, Coral Springs Lifestyle Magazine, In Focus, and others.

Morton is a champion athlete from the World Transplant Games in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she won gold medals in singles tennis and the 20k cycling competition; silver medals in the 800-meter run and 4×100-meter relay; and a bronze medal in the 5k run.

The event will feature tables sponsored by several nonprofit organizations, including the World Kidney Foundation, Donate Life, Life Alliance, the Chris Klug Foundation, the Give A Life Foundation, the UM Student Health Advisory Committee, and other UM student organizations.

The Herbert Wellness Center and the Department of Student Activities and Student Organizations are co-sponsoring the event. University of Miami Alumni Relations will be featuring Jill Morton and her story in the Stories of U campaign.
