This seminar, sponsored by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) in partnership with the Medical Wellness Center, provides participants with a frank look at the problems associated with consuming cow’s milk. Forget thinking that dairy-industry advertising is based on legitimate science. Rather, consider that a multitude of studies suggests that not only is cow’s milk needless for health but it also has components that are detrimental to your health. Learn about the problems associated with insulin growth factor I, casein, and casomorphin and how these components of milk are associated with various chronic diseases and health problems. Lactose and fat are actually the least of your concerns when you drink cow’s milk, even though they can cause problems as well. John E. Lewis, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and associate director of the Medical Wellness Center, will teach participants about other sources of calcium and protein. FSAP Health and Wellness seminars are offered as part of the University of Miami’s Well ’Canes Program.

Miller School of Medicine campus: Tuesday, March 6, from 12 to 1 p.m. at University of Miami Hospital, Seminar Center C.

Coral Gables campus: Wednesday, March 7, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Whitten University Center, Flamingo Room A.

Registration is through ULearn. For help with ULearn, call the Professional Development and Training Office at 305-284-5110. To receive email announcements of upcoming seminars, call the FSAP at 305-284-6604.
