Human Subjects Protections Series: Pandemic Research: When Everyone’s a Human Subject

May
26
12:00 pm

Kenneth W. Goodman, professor of medicine and philosophy, director of the University of Miami Bioethics Program, co-director the UM Ethics Programs, will present “Pandemic Research: When Everyone’s a Human Subject” on Tuesday, May 26 from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Mailman Center for Child Development, Room 3023.

The ongoing debate about the distinction between surveillance and research is especially important in the context of pandemic preparedness and response. Systematic data collection meets the federal definition of “research,” even as it is unintelligible to require standard human subjects protection for such data collection. This seminar will explore the tension between the duties of public health and the protection of research participants.
