Hurricanes ready for ACC Indoor Championships

Ashley Dukes is the No. 1-ranked ACC sprinter in the 60-meter dash this season.

The University of Miami track and field team is set for the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships at the Rector Field House on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, February 25-27.

Junior Ti’erra Brown heads into her third ACC Indoor Championships with two national rankings. She is currently ranked fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.16 seconds) and 14th in the 400-meter dash with a conference-best time of 53.48 seconds. She will compete in both events this weekend with qualifying heats beginning Friday afternoon.

Also garnering national attention is Ashley Dukes. The sprinter ran a conference-best 60-meter dash time of 7.33 at the Penn State National Invitational in January and ranks tenth in the NCAA this season. She will be joined by Tara Thomas and Kristy Whyte. The qualifying heat for the 60-meter dash is set for Friday at 4:05 p.m.

UM’s jumping duo of Deandra Doyley and Brittni Finch will compete in the long and triple jumps. Doyley ranks third in the conference with a leap of 6.30 meters in the long jump. Finch isn’t far behind, as her mark of 6.12 meters is the sixth-best mark in the ACC. Doyley, who has also impressed in the 60-meter hurdles this season, will join Brown and Takecia Jameson in that event.

Miranda Wilson will compete in both the weight throw and the shot put, events in which she ranks fifth and sixth in the ACC, respectively.

After achieving a career-best mark of 1.75 meters at the Penn State Invite, junior Megan Novinger will look for an All-ACC result in the high jump on Saturday.

The strength of the men’s team lies in the 60-meter hurdles, where Devon Hill and Cory Nelms rank first and second in the conference and seventh and 14th nationally. Nelms is the defending ACC champion, and the Hurricanes are hopeful to see both men on the podium.

The ‘Canes look to receive some scoring punch from the football team as Travis Benjamin and Lamar Miller will run in the 60-meter dash, with Brandon Harris and Micanor Regis competing in the 400-meter dash and shot put, respectively.

The 4×400 relay teams for both the men and women are scheduled to compete. The women are the second-ranked team in the ACC and the 11th best in the nation.

Britney Clarke and Rachel Dupree will be the only Hurricanes in action on Thursday, as they will compete in the pentathlon, which is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. Friday’s events start at 1 p.m. with the men’s long jump.

Live results as well as live streaming video of select events on Saturday and Sunday will be available at www.theacc.com/championships.
