Journalist and author John Otis visits UM

Feb
25
5:00 pm

Journalist and author John Otis will be at the School of Communication, Shoma Hall, on Thursday, February 25 at 5 p.m. to discuss his new book, Law of the Jungle. The book is a true-life adventure tale of American hostages, Marxist guerrillas, and buried treasure set in Colombia. It’s also the true account of how a Saving Private Ryan-style mission degenerated into a frenzied, every-man-for-himself gold rush and the story of one of the most amazing hostage-rescue operations in history. Born in Minnesota, John Otis has worked as a journalist in Latin America for more than two decades, and also covered the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. His 2001 investigation of Colombia’s FARC guerrillas for the Houston Chronicle was honored by the Overseas Press Club as the best reporting out of Latin America. Otis now reports from Colombia for Time, GlobalPost.com, and PRI’s The World radio program.
