Alan Goldman, Kenan Professor of Humanities at William & Mary, will present “Huckleberry Finn and Moral Motivation” on Friday, February 5 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Memorial Building, Room 211. Before becoming the Kenan Professor at William & Mary in 2002, Goldman taught at the University of Miami for 25 years, ten as chair of the Department of Philosophy. He has held visiting positions at the University of Auckland, University of Michigan, and University of Colorado, as well as an NEH Fellowship in Residence at Princeton. He is the author of Justice and Reverse Discrimination (Princeton, 1979), The Moral Foundations of Professional Ethics (Rowman & Littlefield, 1980), and Practical Rules: When We Need Them and When We Don’t (Cambridge, 2002), as well as many articles in epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and philosophy of law. Each spring the University of Miami School of Law’s Entertainment and Sports Law Society (ESLS) hosts an annual symposium that convenes attorneys, business executives, agents, and UM faculty to discuss cutting-edge legal issues in sports and entertainment. Now in its 13th year, the symposium has grown to become one of the largest student-run events on campus and features some of the nation’s most well respected speakers. The event will take place on Friday, February 5 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Whitten Learning Center on the University of Miami Coral Gables Campus. The 13th Annual Entertainment and Sports Law Symposium will be held on Friday, February 5 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Whitten Learning Center. Panels will cover a broad range of topics, including “The Changing Landscape of NCAA Athletics,” “The Business of Professional Sports,” “A Decade of Change in the Music Industry,” and “Video Games and The Art of Negotiation.” The daylong symposium will be followed by a cocktail reception, offering students and professionals an opportunity to network with panelists and learn more about careers they may be interested in pursuing. Registration is open to the public, but due to limited seating, tickets will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence, a partnership with Florida International University and the Jean Monnet Chair of the University of Miami with the sponsorship of the Program of Cultural Cooperation of Spain, presents “Spain in the EU and the State of Latin American Integration” on Friday, February 5 at the Ferré Building. The University of Miami School of Business Administration Entrepreneur in Residence, Eric Kriss, will host a weekly practicum series about starting a new venture over the course of the spring semester. The practicum will focus on issues such as forming the entity, developing an ownership structure, creating a Web presence, and various other important topics.
The first session, “Creating Your Identity,” will describe and explain the steps that should be taken when developing an image for one’s new venture. Topics will include selecting a name; choosing logos and icons; acquiring a URL; developing the company’s email, address, phone number; and business cards; and more.
The practicum is free and open to the public. Please join us for the first meeting on Friday, February 5, at 12 p.m. in the Aresty Graduate Business Building, AGB 331. Brown bags welcome.
