Entrepreneurship practicum series continues: Structuring Ownership

The University of Miami School of Business Administration’s Entrepreneur in Residence, Eric Kriss, is hosting a weekly practicum series throughout the spring semester on starting a new venture. The next session is titled  “Structuring Ownership,” which will address topics such as debt versus equity, three C’s of equity, dilution, stock options, and sweat equity.

The practicum is free and open to the public. RSVP is not required. The session takes place on Friday, February 19 at 12 p.m. in the faculty lounge (ground floor of the School of Business Administration). Brown bag welcome.

Panel discussion: ‘Miami, a Sports Media Heaven’

As part of the School of Communication’s Communication Week, UMTV will present “Miami, a Sports Media Heaven” on Friday, February 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the Frances L. Wolfson Building, Studio C. An all-star panel of guests will address issues in the sports media business and shed light on the future of the industry. Panelists will include Jason Jenkins, Miami Dolphins director of media relations; Will Manso, WPLG Local 10’s sports director; Emmanuel Munoz, Miami Marlins director of broadcasting; Joe Pujala, Spanish voice of the Miami Hurricanes and the Miami Heat; Kim Stone, executive vice president and general manager of American Airlines Arena; and Sarah Talalay, sports business columnist at the Sun-Sentinel.

Department of Philosophy Colloquium: Are There No Things That Are Scientific Theories?

Beginners InfoEd Proposal Development hands-on workshop

Learn how to use the InfoEd Proposal Development system to prepare and submit your proposal electronically to the NIH. InfoEd streamlines the proposal development process. It is Web-based and accessible almost anywhere by Mac and PC users. No additional software is required. InfoEd pre-fills agency forms and includes built-in agency validations. It stores proposals in a secure environment and provides a database of all proposals submitted. This is an interactive hands-on computer workshop. Participants will learn how to create, route, submit, and track a proposal using the InfoEd Proposal Development system. This workshop is scheduled for Friday, February 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the M. Christine Schwartz Center for Nursing Education, room 123. Intellectual Law Symposium debuts with discussion of popular video games

The cutting-edge intellectual property issues surrounding the video games “Rock Band” and “Guitar Hero” will be the focus of the first annual Intellectual Property Law Symposium (IPLS).  Speakers will include patent speaker Jeffrey H. Kamenetsky, Christopher & Weisberg, who will discuss patients;  Jaime Rich Vining, Lott & Friedland, who will discuss trademarks;and Leslie Jose Zigel, Ziglaw, who will discuss copyrights.

Join students, faculty, and local IP attorneys at the symposium on Friday, February 19 at 4 p.m. at the School of Law, Room E352.  A reception will follow on the fourth-floor faculty lounge in the Law Library. The event will be eligible for three CLE credits, pending approval.
