The University of Miami School of Law will host “Right to Counsel for Children in Dependency: A Discussion” on Monday, April 5 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. The panel discussion is designed to explore what role a lawyer should play on behalf of a child in the dependency court and examine aspects of Florida law that impede legal representation of minors. Panelists will include Bernard Perlmutter, director of the UM School of Law’s Children and Youth Law Clinic; the Honorable Rosemary Barkett, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit; and Michael Dale, professor at Nova Southeastern University School of Law. A world-class violinist and pianist, Alba Rose Vietor toured the globe and studied under the finest instructors throughout the 20th century. Though she had always experimented with composing, it was in her later years that she really focused on her compositions. Vietor was born in Italy; lived in Uruguay, Argentina, and the United States; spoke Italian, Spanish, French, and English; and married a Dutchman. Her music reflects traditions from around the world as well as from her classical upbringing to produce a modern, international, unique sound.
The second concert of the Alba Rosa Vietor Concert Series, titled Keys through the Millennium, will be presented on Monday, April 5, at 8 p.m. in Clarke Hall. It will feature selections of Vietor’s piano works played by Frost School of Music Dean Shelly Berg and other distinguished faculty and students at the music school. Admission is free.

Dr. Doug Futuyma, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University, will present “Evolutionary Constraints and Ecological Consequences” on Monday, April 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the Cox Science Center, Room 166. His research focuses on speciation and the evolution of ecological interactions among species. His recent work has focused on whether or not constraints on genetic variation are likely to have influenced the phylogenetic history of host associations in a group of leaf beetles, and on the pattern of speciation in this group. George Bugliarello, foreign secretary of the National Academy of Engineering, president emeritus and university professor of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University, will present “Urban Sustainability” on Monday, April 5 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the McArthur Engineering Annex, MCA 202. Bugliarello’s presentation will focus on the explosive growth of cities and sustainability in the future.
