Locks of Love event coming to UM

LINK’s semi-annual Locks of Love event will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, October 6 and 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Whitten University Center, Ballroom B. Come get a high-quality haircut from the hairdressers of Enrique’s Salon and Myra and Company, and help out a good cause at the same time. The cost is $10 for men and $15 for women for normal haircuts, with all proceeds being donated to Locks of Love, a public nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. If you donate six or more inches of hair to Locks of Love, your haircut is free, and you’ll receive a free T-shirt. If you have any questions, or would like to make an appointment, please contact special events chair Mike Acosta at [email protected]. Walk-ins will also be accepted on a limited basis. All who get haircuts will also be entered into a raffle for gift cards to the UM Bookstore.

IRS: Tax Law Updates for 2010

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offers this seminar for those interested in developing an understanding of this year’s updates to tax law. IRS tax consultant Jay Fanning will answer questions and provide information and helpful hints to save you money. This information session will review:

• Changes in the tax law brought on by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
• Overlooked deductions and credits most taxpayers either miss or do not fully claim
• What effect your retirement savings plan has on your current tax bill
• Steps to ensure that you can avoid an IRS audit and the documentation needed to survive one
• Special tips for taxpayers who are facing or are helping someone else face the ongoing economic downturn

Coral Gables campus: Wednesday, October 6 from 12 to 1 p.m. at the McArthur Engineering Annex, Room MEA 202.

Miller School of Medicine campus: Thursday, October 7 from 12 to 1 p.m. at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Executive Board Room, second floor.

Rosenstiel School campus: Friday, October 8 from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Library, Map and Chart Room.

Open enrollment for UM’s Competency-Based Programs is now under way

Open enrollment in the competency-based programs for Administrative Support, Emerging Leaders, and Practicing Leaders began September 1. Each program requires completion of a core set of learning modules, demonstration of mastery, and coaching and mentoring on the part of supervisors and peers. The new Competency-Based Program semester begins January 2011. Registrations are being accepted from September through November. Managers and supervisors who are interested in signing up or recommending staff should visit ulearn.miami.edu to register for the Competency-Based Overview Sessions, which are being offered on both the Coral Gables and Miller School of Medicine campuses.
