Shabbat Shalala is Hillel’s annual event honoring University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala’s unparalleled support and enthusiasm for Jewish extracurricular activities and for the University of Miami Hillel. President Shalala participates in the Shabbat services and dinner, sharing her words of inspiration and greeting each student and guest with her warm embrace. Shabbat Shalala reflects UM’s diversity and UM Hillel’s integration into the larger campus community.
Shabbat Shalala brings together students and members of the faculty as well as many community leaders and members who together celebrate the diversity of Jewish life on campus. The first Shabbat Shalala in 2008 drew 270 participants, and the second in 2009 saw that number grow to 320. This year more than 400 people are expected to participate.
