The Ancient Synagogue as a Public Space in Judaism

In conjunction with the exhibition, Tree of Paradise: Jewish Mosaics from the Roman Empire, on display at the Lowe Art Museum, the Lowe and the Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies present: “The Ancient Synagogue as a Public Space in Judaism” featuring William Green, UM senior vice provost and dean of undergraduate education. The lecture, sponsored by HSBC Private Bank, is free for Lowe members; non-members are $10. The event begins Thursday, January 21 at 7 p.m. at the Lowe Art Museum; a reception will immediately follow.

Cosford screening: Closer to the Dream

The Bill Cosford Cinema presents a special one-night-only screening of the documentary Closer to the Dream. The film is an electoral road trip/portrait of Americans enthusiastically supporting or at times just familiarizing themselves with then-primary candidate Barack Obama. The film documents the journey inside the Obama movement through the inspiring stories of ordinary Americans. Award-winning documentary filmmaking couple Guetty Felin and Hervé Cohen will present the film and host a question-and-answer session. The film screens Thursday, January 21 at 8 p.m. at the Bill Cosford Cinema. The screening is free and open to the public.

Center for Nonprofit Management workshop

The School of Business Administration’s Center for Nonprofit Management will present the workshop “Legal Issues and Ethical Behavior: Handle Ethical Dilemmas with Sense and Grace” on Thursday, January 21 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Storer Auditorium. Guest speaker Anita Cava, associate professor of business law at UM and co-director of the UM Ethics Programs, will discuss topics such as:

Friends of the Libraries lecture: An Everglades Providence

Jack E. Davis, associate professor of history at the University of Florida, will present his book An Everglades Providence: Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century, on Thursday, January 21 as part of the University of Miami Libraries’ Friends of the Libraries lecture series. The first major biography of one of America’s premier environmentalists, Davis’s book explores the 108-year life of this compelling woman, who was a suffragist, lifetime feminist, supporter of the ERA, champion of social justice, and noted author. A wine and cheese reception will be held at 6 p.m.; the program starts at 7 p.m. in the Commons of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. RSVP to [email protected].
