Rezso Kasztner, a Hungarian Jew who tried to rescue the last million Jews of Europe by negotiating face to face with Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann during World War II, moved to Israel–where he found himself accused of collaborating with the enemy. He fought a vicious libel battle and was ultimately assassinated in Tel Aviv. Part real-time investigation, part historical journey, filmmaker Gaylen Ross’s documentary feature follows Kasztner’s family and survivors, plagued by a legacy they are determined to change when, after 50 years, the assassin, Ze’ev Eckstein, breaks his silence. Unearthing the Kasztner story and examining its ramifications for the survivors–his family and country–Ross explores the very nature of history itself: who writes it, how it is remembered, and what is at stake for present and future generations. English and Hebrew with English subtitles. Admission is $6 for all University of Miami alumni, faculty, and staff, and is free for students. General admission is $8. The film screens on Friday, January 29 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, January 30 at 3:30 and 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, January 31 at 1:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com.
