Jacory Harris named to Manning Quarterback and Davey O’Brien Award watch lists

Jacory Harris passed for 3,352 yards in 2009.

University of Miami junior signal caller Jacory Harris has been named to the preseason watch lists for two of college football’s most prestigious honors: the 2010 Manning Quarterback Award and the 2010 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

Last season, Harris threw for 3,352 yards, becoming the first UM quarterback to pass for 3,000 yards in a season since Ken Dorsey in 2002. Harris’s sophomore campaign ranks as one of the most productive in school history, as the Miami native recorded top-ten numbers for a single season for pass completions (242, which ranks second), passing yards (3,352, fourth), and touchdown passes (24, sixth).

The Allstate Sugar Bowl created the Manning Award in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of former NFL and University of Mississippi quarterback Archie Manning and his two sons, Peyton and Eli, Super Bowl-winning NFL quarterbacks for the Indianapolis Colts and New York Giants, respectively. It is the only quarterback award that uses the candidates’ performance in bowl games as a factor in determining the winner.

Ten finalists will be selected in late November, with the winner being announced after the bowl season ends in January. The winner will be honored at a ceremony in New Orleans.

The preseason watch list for the Manning Quarterback Award recognizes some of the top quarterbacks in the nation based on previous collegiate performance. However, every quarterback in the nation is eligible for the award. Additional quarterbacks may be added to the watch list after the start of the season. A list of ten finalists will be released on November 29. The winner will be announced on January 19.

USC’s Matt Leinart was the inaugural winner of the Manning award in 2005, followed by the Texas Longhorns’ Vince Young in 2006. Both went on to be top-ten NFL draft picks.

Meanwhile, 30 of the nation’s top quarterbacks appear on this year’s watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award, which is named for the former Texas Christian University signal caller who led the Horned Frogs to a national championship in 1938. O’Brien, who played for the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles before retiring from pro football in 1940 to join the FBI, died in 1977 from complications of cancer.

Appearing on the O’Brien watch list is not a requirement for a player to win the award. Quarterbacks from all 120 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists on October 25. Three finalists will be announced on November 22, and the winner will be announced on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show on December 9. The 34th Annual O’Brien Awards Dinner will be held February 21 at the Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Harris and the Hurricanes open the 2010 season on Thursday, September 2 against Florida A&M at Sun Life Stadium.
