The Dunspaugh-Dalton Foundation Community and Educational Well-Being Research Center at the School of Education presents a lecture by Tod Sloan, counseling psychology department chair at Lewis and Clark College, at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8. The author of Damaged Life: The Crisis of the Modern Psyche will reflect on the implications of his experiences in a variety of settings related to progressive social transformation. His quest for effective participation in the construction of a just society led him to help develop critical psychology in the United States, study modernization in Latin America, work in program evaluation, volunteer at the local and national levels of the Green Party, and serve as co-coordinator of Psychologists for Social Responsibility. Sloan is also editor of Critical Psychology: Voices for Change, co-editor of the Journal for Social Action in Counseling Psychology, and editor of the Palgrave book series Critical Theory and Practice in Psychology and the Human Sciences. The lecture will take place in the Learning Center, Room 130.

The University of Miami Community is invited to see a live burn demonstration of two mock dorm rooms and a fire and life safety trailer on Wednesday, September 8 from 12 to 2 p.m. on the Foote University Green, located between Richter Library and Whitten University Center. The demonstration will be presented by UM’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety and the Department of Housing and Residential Life.
The event will provide an interactive learning experience for the community, demonstrating how quickly a fire can spread and reinforcing the importance of evacuating during a fire alarm and not tampering with smoke detectors, fire sprinklers, and other life safety equipment.

Nicolò Trocker
The School of Law’s Faculty Lecture Series continues on Wednesday, September 8 with Visiting Professor Nicolò Trocker, who will present the lecture “Party Autonomy and Judicial Discretion in Transnational Litigation: The Problem of Jurisdictional Allocation in Comparative Perspective” in the law school’s fourth-floor faculty meeting room. The lecture begins at 12:35 p.m., following a lunch at noon in the same location. A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture.
Trocker teaches Comparative Law, Civil Procedure, and Conflict of Laws at the University of Florence and has published various books and numerous articles on these subjects. He received his legal education at the Universities of Munich (Germany) and Florence (Italy), where he earned his law degree (summa cum laude) and at the European University Institute, where he received a Jean Monet fellowship. He is teaching Transnational Litigation this semester.
