Biology Departmental Seminar: Bugs and Drugs: Manipulations of Drosophila Lifespan

William Ja, assistant professor in the Department of Metabolism and Aging at The Scripps Research Institute of Florida, will present “Bugs and Drugs: Manipulations of Drosophila Lifespan” on Monday, September 20 at 12:20 p.m. in the Cox Science Center, Room 166. Professor Ja’s research focuses on various longevity-enhancing manipulations and their impact on aging and metabolism in Drosophila, the common fruit fly and one of the most widely used laboratory models. Among these manipulations are dietary restriction and the effects on the hosts of certain types of bacteria that live in the gastrointestinal tract. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture

This seminar, offered by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) in partnership with the Division for Complementary and Integrative Medicine, provides participants with an overview of the many benefits of TCM and acupuncture. TCM and acupuncture are more than just the insertion of needles into specific points along the body. Come and learn how different modalities are incorporated into acupuncture sessions and why they are used. You’ll also learn about the conditions that acupuncture is used to treat and how to take advantage of your UM health benefits for this specific service. Garrett Krause, acupuncture physician in the Division of Complementary and Integrative Medicine, will conduct the seminar.

Miller School of Medicine campus: Monday, September 20 from 12 to 1 p.m., Medical Wellness Center classroom.

Coral Gables campus: Wednesday, September 22 from 12 to 1 p.m. in the McArthur Engineering Annex, MEA 202.

Recognizing Opportunities for a New Business

The Launch Pad at UM will present “Recognizing Opportunities for a New Business” on Monday, September 20 from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. at the Toppel Career Center Library. Participants will learn how to assess ideas and opportunities, determine if a bad idea can still make money, learn how to turn a good idea into a great idea, and recognize that when an idea is great, one may not be the best person to implement it. The event is free and open to UM faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

UM’s CAS Gallery co-presents PrintZero Studios exhibition in Wynwood

The University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Gallery, along with PrintZero Studios, will present an international exhibition of printmaking culled from the PrintZero Studios 7th Exchange at UM Wynwood Project Space, 2200-A NW 2nd Avenue, Miami.

The exhibition, which features the work of artists from Scotland, Canada, France, England, and the United States, runs from September 6 through October 1. In celebration of the opening, a reception will be held on September 11.

The exhibition includes works by Michael Alm, Charles Baird, Nola Dahl, Lisa Hasegawa, Elizabeth Jabar, Norman McBeath, Richard Repasky, Charissa Schulze, and many other artists. A catalog will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.

A full schedule of CAS Gallery exhibitions can be viewed at www.as.miami.edu/art. Visit the University of Miami Wynwood Project Space every second Saturday for the monthly gallery walk to view student, faculty, and alumni works.
