An award-winning audience pleaser at the Toronto and Tribeca Film Festivals, Ruba Nadda’s Cairo Time is both a love letter to a city and a sweeping romantic drama in the tradition of such films as Brief Encounter and Lost in Translation. Oscar-nominee Patricia Clarkson stars as a beautiful American abroad in Egypt who finds herself enamored by more than the sun-swept vistas of Cairo. Juliette (Clarkson), a fashion magazine editor in her 40s, travels to Cairo to meet her husband for a three-week vacation. When he is unavoidably delayed, he sends his trusted friend Tareq (Alexander Siddig) to keep her company. As he guides her through the sights, sounds, and unique customs of the exotic city, unexpected feelings emerge, leading to an awakening of emotion that takes Juliette by surprise. English and Arabic with English subtitles. The film screens on Friday, September 24 at 9 p.m.; Saturday, September 25 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, September 26 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is $6 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non UM-students, and staff. A bittersweet comedy about love, family, and dropping bombs. Alistar and Valerie have been planning a special trip to Germany for a very long time. When their son Ross stops by the house to send them off, happenstance turns into an impromptu family road trip of the most tortuous kind. Alistar berates Ross for all that he is not in life, while Valerie tries to keep the peace. It is soon discovered that Alistar’s reason for the often comic, sometimes painful trip is to shed a guilt he’s been carrying for years. Ultimately, the family learns they need each other more then they imagined. English and German with English subtitles. The film screens on Friday, September 24 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, September 25 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.; and Sunday, September 26 at 4 p.m. Admission is $6 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non UM-students, and staff. General admission is $8. Cash only. Free for UM students. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.
