An award-winning audience pleaser at the Toronto and Tribeca Film Festivals, Ruba Nadda’s Cairo Time is both a love letter to a city and a sweeping romantic drama in the tradition of such films as Brief Encounter and Lost in Translation. Oscar-nominee Patricia Clarkson stars as a beautiful American abroad in Egypt who finds herself enamored by more than the sun-swept vistas of Cairo. Juliette (Clarkson), a fashion magazine editor in her 40s, travels to Cairo to meet her husband for a three-week vacation. When he is unavoidably delayed, he sends his trusted friend Tareq (Alexander Siddig) to keep her company. As he guides her through the sights, sounds, and unique customs of the exotic city, unexpected feelings emerge, leading to an awakening of emotion that takes Juliette by surprise. English and Arabic with English subtitles. The film screens on Friday, September 24 at 9 p.m.; Saturday, September 25 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, September 26 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is $6 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non UM-students, and staff. General admission is $8. Cash only. Free for UM students. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.

A bittersweet comedy about love, family, and dropping bombs. Alistar and Valerie have been planning a special trip to Germany for a very long time. When their son Ross stops by the house to send them off, happenstance turns into an impromptu family road trip of the most tortuous kind. Alistar berates Ross for all that he is not in life, while Valerie tries to keep the peace. It is soon discovered that Alistar’s reason for the often comic, sometimes painful trip is to shed a guilt he’s been carrying for years. Ultimately, the family learns they need each other more then they imagined. English and German with English subtitles. The film screens on Friday, September 24 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, September 25 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.; and Sunday, September 26 at 4 p.m. Admission is $6 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non UM-students, and staff. General admission is $8. Cash only. Free for UM students. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.

Cosford Midnight Movie: Trash Humpers

Sep
24
12:00 am

Trash Humpers follows a small group of elderly “Peeping Toms” through the shadows and margins of an unfamiliar world, inhabited by broken dreams and beyond the limits of morality, that crashes against a torn and frayed America. As writer/director Harmony Korine describes, “I remember when I was a child there was a small group of elderly people who would hang out in the back alleys and under bridges by my house. They always seemed to be getting drunk and dancing. One night I looked out my bedroom window and saw a group of them humping trashcans and laughing. It sounded like they were speaking a strange invented language. This is a movie about them.” The film screens on Friday, September 24 at midnight. Admission is $6 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non UM-students, and staff. General admission is $8. Cash only. Free for UM students. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com or call 305-284-4861.

USpeak series kicks off second season with Jamaican writer and poet Geoffrey Philp

The University of Miami USpeak Open Verse and Performance Series kicks off its second season Friday, September 24 with Jamaican writer and poet Geoffrey Philp.

On eight Friday nights throughout the school year, UM students, faculty, and Miami-area community members will gather for evenings of lively literary activity at the Oasis Deli at Whitten University Center. In addition to a featured reader, audience members are invited to share their own short stories and poems. The open mic session showcases the talent of a wide spectrum of writers, from UM graduate and undergraduate students to community members and high school students. It is not usual to see 20 people signed up to read their work on any given night.

“Students named our open mic series USpeak because they wanted everyone on campus to know the program was about the community—not just published writers, but people who are freshmen and professors by day and spoken-word artists by night,” says M. Evelina Galang, director of creative writing at UM.

The first USpeak event of the year continues the English Department’s yearlong celebration of Lester Goran’s 50th teaching anniversary by featuring Goran’s former student, UM Creative Writing alumnus Geoffrey Philp. Philp will read excerpts from his newest collection of poems, Dub Wise, which is scheduled to be released by Peepal Tree Press later this month. In addition to writing poetry and fiction, Philp teaches English and chairs the North Campus’ College Preparatory Department at Miami Dade College.

USpeak is recorded and available to listeners on iTunes and is sponsored, in part, by the University of Miami’s Creative Writing Program, English Department, and Auxiliary Services. Doors open at 6 p.m. and programs begin at 6:30 p.m. Audience members are invited to bring a poem or a page of prose and to read during the open mic portion of the evening.

USpeak events are free and open to the public. They will also take place on October 8, November 12, December 3, January 28, February 25, March 11, and April 15. For more information about Philp or about the series, click here.
