Next monthly networking meeting for clinical research professionals is May 21

Clinical research professionals from all University of Miami campuses are invited to attend the monthly meeting of a networking group for clinical research staff, including research coordinators, nurses, associates, assistants, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) coordinators and support staff.

The next networking meeting will be held on Friday, May 21 from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Clinical Research Building, sixth-floor executive center. The schedule will be as follows:

12 to 12:20 p.m.

11th Annual Zubrod Memorial Lecture and Cancer Research Poster Session

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center will host the 11th Annual Zubrod Memorial Lecture and Cancer Research Poster Session on Friday, May 21 in honor of its founding director, Charles Gordon Zubrod. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Jackson Health System Diagnostic Treatment Center, second-floor conference room. Mario R. Capecchi, professor of biology and human genetics at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Utah, will present the lecture, “Modeling Human Cancer in the Mouse,” at 2 p.m.

Capecchi is interested in the molecular genetic analysis of mammalian development, with emphasis on neurogenesis, organogenesis, patterning of the vertebral column, and limb development. He also contributes to the modeling of human disease in the mouse, from cancer to neuropsychiatric disorders. He received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the world’s highest recognition for contributions to basic and clinical medical research. He was honored for his work in mouse gene targeting, a method for precisely manipulating genes to create animal models of human development and disease. Immediately following the lecture, attendees are invited to view posters from 3 to 4:30 p.m., followed by an award ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.
