Student-Produced Films to be Showcased at ’Canes Film Festival

Documentaries, comedies, dramas, and other films produced by undergraduate and graduate students in the Motion Pictures Program at the University of Miami School of Communication will be showcased at the 2011 ’Canes Film Festival, which will take place May 6-8 at the Cosford Cinema. Admission is free.

Festival Schedule

Friday, May 6
3 p.m.: Undergraduate film screenings
8 to 10 p.m.: Senior showcase

Saturday, May 7
12 p.m.: Documentary screenings followed by independent projects and graduate student films
9 to 10 p.m.: Awards ceremony
10 p.m. to midnight: After-party

Sunday, May 8
7 to 9 p.m.: “Best of Fest,” a screening of the best films from the festival.

David Henrie of ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ headlines United Way Rocks for Education at the BUC

David Henrie, star of the Emmy-winning series Wizards of Waverly Place, has teamed up with United Way of Miami-Dade to raise awareness and support for quality early education. United Way Rocks for Education is a fun-filled evening of entertainment, music, and comedy—featuring Henrie and celebrity friends, including Drake Bell of Drake & Josh and his band—to benefit the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education, an innovative learning, teaching, and training initiative dedicated to elevating the quality of early care and education in Miami-Dade and beyond. The event will take place Saturday, May 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the University of Miami’s BankUnited Center.

Henrie will host the family-friendly event, featuring music and entertainment by his celebrity friends, performances by local dance teams, appearances by local celebrities, VIP meet-and-greets, contests, and more. Event tickets are $15 for general admission, $25 for floor seats, and $50 VIP (VIP includes seating in first three rows and a VIP backstage meet-and-greet with Henrie and celebrity friends prior to show).

This first-time event will kick off Henrie’s partnership with United Way to promote the importance of early education throughout the nation.

ALS Recovery Fund 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk

The annual ALS Recovery Fund 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, May 7 in Coconut Grove, starting at Dinner Key Auditorium, 3500 Pan American Drive. Registration opens at 7 a.m., and the walk begins at 7:30 a.m. To register as a runner/walker or to make a donation, please visit the event website. Proceeds will fund ALS research at UM and assist patients in the tri-county area who are living with ALS.

CAS Gallery to Display Work of BFA Graduating Students

The works of graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) students will be on display at the University of Miami’s CAS Gallery from May 4-13. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on Thursday, May 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the gallery, 1210 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables campus.

The BFA is a four-year program with 72 credits completed in the Department of Art and Art History, with the balance of the 120 credits being in general education courses, giving students an in-depth education in the arts combined with a liberal arts education. Graduates often go directly into careers in graphics, photography, museum, or gallery work, while some go on to graduate school or start careers in the fine arts.
