Developmental Center for AIDS Research grand rounds will be held on Tuesday, May 17 at 12 p.m. in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, third-floor auditorium. Rama Rao Amara, associate professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Emory University School of Medicine and a researcher in the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, will present “Prevention of Heterologous Mucosal SIV Infection by Vaccination.”
As a research associate in the laboratory of Harriet Robinson at Emory University, Amara played a major role in the preclinical development of the AIDS vaccine, now in phase I clinical trials. A faculty member in the Emory Vaccine Center, Amara is working to develop a version of this vaccine that could be used to control AIDS worldwide. His research efforts are focused on understanding the phenotypes of protective CD8 T cells and the mechanisms of their generation and maintenance. He is also developing strategies that can substitute the requirement of CD4 T cell help for generating functional CD8 T cells. For more information, please contact Marie McEntee at [email protected].

The SPEAK test, required for all international teaching assistants to demonstrate ability in spoken English, will be administered on Tuesday, May 17 at 5 p.m. in Allen Hall, Room 102.
