The Debbie School’s Scholastic Book Fair continues today and tomorrow, May 12-13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the breezeway between the Mailman Center for Child Development and the Debbie School on the Miller School of Medicine campus. Tune into WPBT2 on Thursday, May 12 at 8 p.m. for “An Evening with Dave Grusin,” featuring students from the Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and Jazz Vocal program.
Grusin, a ten-time Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award-winning composer, conductor, and pianist, has scored some of the most entertaining and enduring films of the past half-century. An Evening with Dave Grusin (available on CD, Blu-ray Disc, and ROBA iPad app) is a groundbreaking live program that captures him conducting and performing with a host of stars at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.
The musical selections feature Grusin’s award-winning film scores for On Golden Pond, Tootsie, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Goonies, and more. Additionally, Grusin celebrates the music of great American composer George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Henry Mancini’s Moon River, and Leonard Bernstein’s music for the Broadway hit West Side Story. Grusin is joined by guest artists Patti Austin, Jon Secada, Monica Mancini, Gary Burton, Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres, and Sammy Figueroa.

Kerry Burnstein, professor of molecular and cellular pharmacology, will present Discovery Science Grand Rounds on Thursday, May 12 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh-floor auditorium. Burnstein’s lecture, titled “Targeting Steroid Hormone-Regulated Pathways in Prostate Cancer,” will focus on the mechanisms that control cellular responses to androgen and vitamin D and how these pathways impact prostate cancer prevention, diagnosis, and therapy. A 20-minute reception will precede the lecture. Those who cannot attend can view the event via live webcast.
