Help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (October) and American Indian Heritage Month (November) all at once by taking a new tour at the Gifford Arboretum. The “Trees of the Maya” tour features the new Maya Cocoa Garden exhibit. Meet at the stone bench (behind the Cox and Physics buildings) for the tour, which will take place Tuesday, October 13 at 5 p.m.
Of those people who independently invented agriculture, the Maya were the only ones who created an agro-ecosystem in the forest. See the trees that not only provided them with fruits, beverages, nuts, rubber, medicines, and of course cocoa, but which were also spiritually important. And what would a visit to the cocoa garden be without a little chocolate…

The School of Communication’s Motion Picture program and the Bill Cosford Cinema present Prisoners Among Us, a historical documentary film about the Italian-American identity and its emergence during World War II. Produced and directed by Michael Di Lauro, the film will screen on Tuesday, October 13 at 7 p.m. in the Bill Cosford Cinema. Admission is free and open to the public. Di Lauro has won six regional EMMYs for his work in commercials and television and earned the American Film Festival’s Blue Ribbon. Prisoners Among Us won the 2004 Best Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the New York International Independent Film Festival. Di Lauro will be answering questions and discussing the film after the screening. The screening is organized by Anthony Allegro, professor of motion pictures in the School of Communication.
