The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is hosting its first free webinar on “Genetic Screening for Breast Cancer: Understanding Your Breast Cancer Risk and Your Options.” The timely event will be held on Thursday, October 29 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Certified genetic counselor Talia Donenberg and breast cancer specialist Monica Yepes, member of the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at Sylvester, will lead participants through a presentation about the roles played by family history and genetics in the development of the disease. They will describe the process of genetic testing and determining which individuals may be good candidates for testing. They will also discuss the best approaches to early detection, treatment options, and the latest breakthroughs in the fight against breast cancer. The Physician Referral Office (PRO) invites all to participate in its traditional Halloween candy sale to benefit United Way. The event will be held October 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the medical campus at the Park Plaza West Garage, Suite G (Breezeway). Bags and cups filled with an assortment of treats are available for purchase at $1 or $2. This year’s candy was graciously donated to the PRO in loving memory of George Garrandes and in appreciation for the caring work the office provides.

Mark Wasserman, professor of history at Rutgers University, will present “The New Nineteenth Century in Latin America,” which will focus on redefining 19th-century Latin America. The event, presented by UM’s Center for Latin American Studies, will take place on Thursday, October 29 at 7 p.m. at the Whitten Learning Center, Room 192.
