James Klaus presents a seminar for the Department of Biology titled “The Origin of Modern Caribbean Reefs: Evolution and Extinction from the Miocene to Recent” on Monday, October 5, in Cox 166 from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. Klaus is an assistant professor in the Department of Geology. The focus of his research lies in the evolution and extinction of Cenozoic to recent reef corals, paleoecology of Cenozoic reef coral communities, and the geomicrobiology of modern coral reef ecosystems. Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Grand Rounds

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is offering Grand Rounds on Monday, October 5 featuring Sandee Bristow and Halland Chen, PGY 4 residents in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, who will present “Spontaneous Thoracic Myelopathy/Spine and Musculoskeletal Injury” at The Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh-floor Apex Center from 4 to 5 p.m.

The Miller School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.

International Conference on Communication in Health Care

The 2009 International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (ICCH) will be held at the Miami Beach Resort and Spa from Sunday through Wednesday, October 4-7. The ICCH is the largest annual gathering of researchers, educators, and administrators from around the globe to focus on improving communication in health care. The multidisciplinary nature of conference delegates encourages the integration of perspectives, theory, practice, and innovation. Emphases of this year’s conference are ethical issues in health care communication, patient safety as a communication issue, and intercultural issues in communication. The conference will feature Jozien Bensing, Michael Leonard, and William Branch as the keynote speakers. President Donna E. Shalala will present the opening remarks.

This conference is approved for 23 contact hours for nurses, 17 continuing education units for social workers, counselors, and psychologists, and 16.75 continuing medical education credits for physicians.
