Art & Copy introduces the cultural visionaries who revolutionized advertising during the industry’s golden age by creating slogans to live by and ads we all remember. You may never have heard of them, but these pop pioneers changed the way we eat, work, shop, and communicate—often in ways we don’t even realize. From the introduction of Volkswagen in America to the triumph of Apple Computer, Art & Copy explores the most successful and influential advertising campaigns of the 20th century and the creative minds who launched them. Featuring rare interviews with industry legends, the film reveals the stories and personal odysseys that have shaped some of the most profound and influential advertising messages of our time. Art & Copy opens a window to the creative process and identifies the critical elements that can transform a singular idea into a global phenomenon. The film screens on Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, October 3 at 1:30 and 5:45 p.m.; and Sunday, October 4 at 1:45 and 6:10 p.m. at the Cosford Cinema. Art exhibition: ‘Dallas in Miami’

Oct ’09

5:00 pm

UM’s Department of Art and Art History is pleased to present Dallas in Miami, an exhibition of prints by faculty and students from the University of Dallas. The works on display represent a range of printmaking techniques, from screen prints to etchings to collagraphs, as well as works that incorporate multiple techniques and mixed-media elements. This exhibition is part of a print exchange in which prints by University of Miami artists were also shipped to the University of Dallas, Texas, to be displayed in a concurrent exhibition. Although the artists were not constrained by any particular theme or overarching conceptual framework, the very nature of a cross-country print exchange suggests questions of place and the extent to which geographical or institutional factors may play a role in shaping the work of a contemporary artist. Because such questions lead to multiple interpretations, Dallas in Miami hopes to stimulate an open-ended conversation among viewers.

The opening reception for the exhibition will take place on Friday, October 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the College of Arts and Sciences Gallery, where the art will be on view through Saturday, October 24. Admission to the CAS Gallery is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 12 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 12 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
