The Sponsored Programs Education Workshop is a required institutional program for all key personnel listed on proposals. The goal is to educate key personnel and administrators with the fiscal and compliance issues of pre- and post-award management. The workshop covers the most recent information on the grant process, from finding funding opportunities to closing an account. The workshop will review the PI’s role and responsibility for administering sponsored projects, explain established policies and procedures, and provide an overview of the central support services available to the investigator. It will be held on Wednesday, October 28 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Dominion Towers, 12th-floor conference room. Space is limited. Each academic year, the University of Miami’s Faculty Senate holds one of its meetings on the campus of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. This year, the meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Rosenstiel School’s Seminar Room. All faculty members are welcome to attend. The School of Communication will host Academy Award-nominated director/screenwriter Jason Reitman. Reitman, whose credits include Juno, Up in the Air, and Thank You for Smoking, will discuss his craft on Wednesday, October 28 from 2 to 3:45 p.m. in the School of Communication International Building at Shoma Hall, 3053. A special sneak preview of Reitman’s newest film, Up in the Air, specifically for UM faculty, staff, and students, will take place on Monday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the AMC Sunset Theater. A UM ID is required for admission.

The UM Department of Political Science is hosting a public forum on health care reform on Wednesday, October 28 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Whitten Learning Center 110. Scheduled to appear on the panel are Helen Ferré, host of PBS’s public affairs show Issues; Gregory Koger, a professor in UM’s Department of Political Science and an expert on Congress; Laura Schwartz, CBS Early Show contributor and political consultant; and former Clinton staffer Robert Schwartz, UM Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.
