University of Miami Professor of Law David Abraham will present from his paper, “The Alien-Citizen Distinction and the Global War on Terrorism,” at the School of Law’s Faculty Speaker Series on Wednesday, November 4. Lunch will be served at 12 p.m. in the Faculty Conference Room, room G480, on the fourth floor of the law library, and the talk will start at 12:35 p.m. A question-and-answer session will end by 1:50 p.m.

The University of Miami’s Center for Hemispheric Policy will host a book program featuring Gary Hufbauer, Reginald Jones senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and co-author of the book Global Warming and the World Trading System. The program takes place on Wednesday, November 4 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Hufbauer’s book examines the economic aspects of greenhouse gas emissions and suggests a policy strategy to reduce them without adversely affecting global trade. This panel discussion on the preservation and restoration of Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key will include Jorge Hernandez, a preservationist and University of Miami School of Architecture professor; Hilario Candela, the original architect of the stadium, which was built in 1963; and Becky Matkov, president and CEO of Dade Heritage Trust. For the past year, Hernandez has been involved in extensive efforts to save the now-abandoned structure, which hosted boat races, concerts, and other events during its heyday.
The panel will be followed by a reception and the opening of an exhibition of works by University of Miami students who took part in a semester-long design studio on the restoration of the site. The event takes place on Wednesday, November 4 at 6 p.m. in the Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center’s Glasgow Hall and Korach Gallery. It is free and open to the public. The exhibition will remain open to the public through November 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

On Wednesday, November 4 at 11:15 a.m. at The Sue and Leonard Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies, Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg will discusses the story of Joseph in Genesis. Zornberg’s latest book, The Murmuring Deep: Reflections on the Biblical Unconscious, explores biblical commentators’ understanding of the interplay between conscious and unconscious levels of experience. Other acclaimed books include Genesis: the Beginning of Desire, which was awarded the National Jewish Book Award for nonfiction in 1995 , and The Particulars of Rapture: Reflections on Exodus (2001). Zornberg also holds a visiting lectureship at the London School of Jewish Studies. She travels widely, lecturing in Jewish, academic, and psychoanalytic settings.
