According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, more than 50 percent of small businesses fail in the first year and 95 percent fail within the first five years–and these statistics do not take into consideration the impact of the recent global financial crisis. The prevailing belief is that the majority of small businesses fail because of financial difficulties, a viewpoint supported by conventional business wisdom that the bottom line is the benchmark for small-business performance.
However, new research reveals some interesting facts. The purpose of this workshop is to unveil a contemporary method that entrepreneurs may use to chart strategic direction in turbulent economic waters. The workshop will investigate the core areas of an organization, and present a set of tools for evaluating the vulnerability of a small business and its ability to recover from destructive actions that may interrupt its operation. We will conclude with a group participation exercise that will illustrate the theoretical knowledge covered in the first part of the presentation.
The event occurs on Thursday, November 5 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Toppel Career Center, 1306 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables, Florida. This workshop is focused on business professionals and executives interested in entrepreneurship and enhancing their understanding of the contribution of human elements to the business environment.
The workshop will cover:
- Why do businesses exist?
- Why do businesses fail? Why do they succeed?
- How do we measure business success?
- What is missing from the bottom-line approach to measuring business success?
- What are the hidden costs of a small business?
- What is small business vulnerability?
- The 12 core areas of small businesses
Attendees should bring a single sheet of 8/12 x 11” paper on which they have written their thoughts on the following questions: How would you define a business success? Who would you define a business failure? In your opinion, what are the three most important elements that contribute to small-business success? Bring your notes to the seminar so we can share your ideas with the participants.
The workshop will be led by Doron Zilbershtein, president of Winnovation Solutions, a Miami-based firm that specializes in assisting small- to medium-sized companies to achieve and sustain performance excellence through culture. Food and beverages will be provided. The event is sponsored by the University of Miami Citizens Board.
