Nicole Gerardo, assistant professor of biology at Emory University, will present “Immunity in a complex microbial world: The pea aphid immune response in relation to both pathogens and symbionts” on Monday, November 9 in the Cox Science Center, Room 166 from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. Gerardo’s research focuses on the evolutionary ecology of microbial host-parasite interactions. The Miami-Florida European Union Center of Excellence, a partnership with Florida International University and the Jean Monnet Chair of the University of Miami, with the sponsorship of the Program of Cultural Cooperation of Spain, cordially invite you to a guest talk and discussion, “The Adaptation of Spain’s Law to the European Union Legislation,” on Monday, November 9 at 5 p.m. in Merrick 307. Santiago Cabanas, Consul General of Spain, will provide the opening words, followed by the presentation by Ramón Mullerat of the University of Barcelona and KPMG Abogados. Ambler H. Moss Jr. of the University of Miami will serve as moderator.
This is the inaugural activity to commemorate the 25 years (1985-2010) of Spain’s membership in the EU and celebrate the Spanish presidency of the EU Council (January-June 2010).

On Monday, November 9, in the McArthur Engineering Annex, Room 202, the College of Engineering will host Barbara Liskov as part of its Distinguished Speaker Series. Liskov is currently associate provost for faculty equity, an institute professor, and a member of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has won many prestigious awards for contributions to software design and has authored three books and many technical papers. She will present “Security of Internet Storage,” which will discuss the problems that arise in replicating data and describe techniques that can be used to resolve these issues.
