Oscar-winning Frost School alumnus Nettinga to speak at UM

Distinguished music engineering alumnus Myron Nettinga will speak at a weekly forum on Friday, November 6 from 9:05 to 9:50 a.m. at Fillmore Hall at the Frost School of Music, delivering three workshops in the studio. Myron won an Academy Award for best sound in 2002 for his work on Black Hawk Down. Some of his sound credits are listed here. The event is free and open to the public.

As part of Alumni Weekend 2009, the School of Communication hosts the second annual School of Communication Alumni and Student Barbecue on Friday, November 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Common Ground Courtyard. UM Homecoming 2009 ‘Rocks U Like a Hurricane’

finalized theme logoNearly 3,000 alumni from around the country will return to South Florida to join current students, faculty, and community members to celebrate the University of Miami’s Homecoming 2009 festivities.

Returning alumni will have a chance to go back into the classroom with leading UM faculty members for the Audrey Finkelstein UM Experience, an interactive education program. They will also have the opportunity to reconnect with former classmates at the reunion parties on Alumni Avenue. This block party will feature entertainment, food, and spirits and will take place on Friday, November 6 from 6:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. at Stanford Circle on the Coral Gables Campus.

Rock down to ‘Electric Avenue’ during UM’s annual homecoming parade, which kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 6. Grand Marshal Bennie Blades (former defensive back for the Hurricanes from 1985-1987 and third overall pick by the Detroit Lions in 1988), UM President Donna E. Shalala, Sebastian the Ibis, the Band of the Hour, and UM cheerleaders will join 20 colorful floats on the parade route.

In 1970s Germany, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the young and still-fragile democracy. Radicalized children of the Nazi generation Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof, and Gudrun Ensslin are leading a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment. Their aim is to create a more humane society, but by spreading terror and bloodshed, they lose their own humanity. The head of the German police force, Horst Herold, relentlessly pursues the young terrorists, even though he knows they are only the tip of the iceberg. Amreeka chronicles the adventures of Muna, a single mother who leaves the West Bank with Fadi, her teenage son, with dreams of an exciting future in the promised land of small-town Illinois. In America, as her son navigates high school hallways the way he used to move through military checkpoints, the indomitable Muna scrambles together a new life cooking up falafel burgers as well as hamburgers at the local White Castle. Told with heartfelt humor by writer-director Cherien Dabis in her feature film debut, Amreeka is a universal journey into the lives of a family of immigrants and first-generation teenagers caught between their heritage and the new world in which they now live and the bittersweet search for a place to call home.
