Frost Opera Theater presents Benjamin Britten’s comic opera Albert Herring on March 3, 4, 5, and 6 at Gusman Concert Hall. Albert Herring is one of Britten’s most witty scores, rife with musical quotes and strikingly Mozartean in its musical characterizations and its mix of pathos and humor.

The residents of a sleepy English village are aghast to learn that unsullied young women are nowhere to be found. Without a suitable candidate to be queen of the village’s May Day festival, timid Albert is crowned “King of the May.” A night of carousing ensues, leaving the town elders scandalized and his friends impressed. Contemporaries of Britten speculated that Albert was a satirical self-portrait of the composer himself.

Frost Opera Theater will by joined by members of the Frost Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alan Johnson. Dean Southern stages the production, and the set design is the result of a second collaboration between Frost Opera Theater and the University of Miami School of Architecture. Simone Meeks’s design was chosen from among the students enrolled in a fall 2010 course, led by François Lejeune, with the objective of designing a set for the current production. Support the Department of Neurological Surgery at the Walk for a Cure event on Sunday, March 6 at 10 a.m. at Oleta River State Park, 3400 NE 163rd Street, in North Miami Beach. Walk for a Cure will help fund neuroblastoma research efforts at the Miller School of Medicine. A rare cancer of the sympathetic nervous system (a nerve network that carries messages from the brain throughout the body), neuroblastoma most commonly affects children ages 5 or younger. Walk for a Cure is sponsored by The Mystic Force Foundation, which was founded by Steven Vanni, assistant professor of neurological surgery at the Miller School of Medicine, and his wife, Silvia, in honor of their son, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma.

Registration is $25, with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to fund research. Help surpass last year’s total of $60,000. To participate, call the foundation administrator, Ellen Vanni-Bunch, at 305-726-7306. For more information, click here.
