The Department of Philosophy will host Allen Buchanan, James B. Duke Professor of Philosophy at Duke University, on Thursday, March 10 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the University Center, Room 245. Buchanan will present “Reciprocal Legitimation: Why States Need International Institutions.” Buchanan received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975. He taught at the University of Arizona, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and the University of Minnesota before joining Duke’s faculty in 2002 as professor of public policy and philosophy. He has written six books covering such topics as Marx, applied ethics (especially biomedical ethics), social justice, and international justice, including the foundations of international law. The School of Education’s Department of Teaching and Learning and the Diversity Committee will host the lecture “Addressing Diversity in Higher Education: Moving Beyond False Starts” by Stanley C. Trent, assistant dean for diversity and equity and associate professor of special education in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, on Thursday, March 10, from 12 to 1:15 p.m. at the M. Christine Schwartz Center for Nursing Education, Room 106. The event is open to the public.
Trent’s current research includes multicultural teacher training in special education, the disproportionate placement of culturally and linguistically diverse students in special education programs and programs for the gifted, and inclusive education practices in urban schools.
