A washed-up former baseball player is sentenced to community service in this feel-good comedy about overcoming bigotry and self-doubt. Attempting to rebuild his reputation by coaching baseball, he discovers the only people willing to give him a second chance are equally desperate Yeshiva students on a quest to start their own team. The film mixes shtick with a surprisingly sensitive portrayal of Orthodox customs, co-starring Bart Johnson (High School Musical) and Don Most (Happy Days) and featuring a cameo by Jewish gospel sensation Joshua Nelson. This film will screen Friday, March 25 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 26 at 5 p.m.; and Sunday, March 27 at 3 p.m. Admission is $7 for seniors, University of Miami alumni, faculty, non UM students and staff. General admission is $9. Free for UM students. To purchase tickets online or for more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com, or call 305-284-4861.

The Lattman Lecture Film Series continues with The Human Resources Manager, the 2010 winner of Israel’s Academy Award for Best Picture, on Thursday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bill Cosford Cinema. Directed by Eran Riklis (The Syrian Bride and Lemon Tree), The Human Resources Manager is a tragicomedy set in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian War. The HR manager of Israel’s largest industrial bakery is in trouble. When an employee is killed during a suicide bombing and her body remains unclaimed, the bakery is held responsible. In an effort to save the reputation of the business and prevent the publication of an offensive article, the self-centered HR manager is sent on a mission to make things right—a mission that could quite possibly change his life. Presented in Hebrew, English, and Romanian with English subtitles.
A panel discussion featuring Ellen Wedner, director of the Miami Jewish Film Festival; Ranen Omer-Sherman, professor of English in UM’s College of Arts and Sciences; and other UM faculty members will follow the screening.
