Getting off to a Healthy Start

School of EdLauren Ferra and Rafael Cruz conduct a finger prick to collect a drop of blood for lactate analysis. The experiment was one of many activities in which Miami-Dade County high school students participated as part of the University of Miami School of Education’s Healthy Start Summer Program. The new initiative, hosted by the school’s Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences, provided health literacy and personal wellness training for 120 high school freshmen and sophomores from local Miami-Dade County public schools. Two separate four-week summer sessions were conducted, during which students attended lectures and labs on muscle physiology and flexibility, cardiovascular physiology, nutrition and energy balance, and sports science. Social skills building and leadership training were also taught, and the students took part in supervised field trips, one of them to a local Whole Foods Market.
