Department of Philosophy Lecture: Common Sense and Ontology

The Department of Philosophy presents Avrum Stroll, professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of California, San Diego, who will lecture on “Common Sense and Ontology.” Stroll has published 20 books and almost 150 articles. His books include Informal Philosophy (Roman and Littlefield, forthcoming), Moore and Wittgenstein (Oxford, 1994), Sketches of Landscapes: Philosophy by Example (MIT, 1998), and Twentieth-Century Analytic Philosophy (Columbia, 2000). Rebecca Thurber, a microbial ecologist and virologist from Florida International University, will present “Exploring the Unseen Majority Using Microbial and Viral Metagenomics” on Monday, September 21 from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. in the Cox Science Center, Room 166. Thurber’s work uses interdisciplinary and high technology approaches to address questions about how organisms and their associated microbiota adapt at the molecular, cellular, and community levels. The Launch Pad presents ‘Evaluating Opportunities: Finding Data’

Attend this interactive session on Monday, September 21 from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. at the Toppel Career Center Library, and explore how to find data and statistics to support a entrepreneurial idea. How many customers may be interested in a product or service? Are customers in one city or country more likely to be interested in a particular product? Who are the competitors?
