Public meeting at UM on September 2 concerning FPL plans

Public meetings are being held for people to learn more about Florida Power & Light Company’s plans to increase nuclear energy production at its Turkey Point facility and install four new high-voltage transmission lines in Miami-Dade County. One of these lines, which would run from Palmetto Bay to downtown Miami, would be adjacent to the Coral Gables campus along Ponce de Leon Boulevard.

An upcoming meeting sponsored by the South Florida Regional Planning Council will be held Wednesday, September 2 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the BankUnited Center’s Hurricane 100 Room. Representatives from FPL and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, which is reviewing the application, will attend. Attendees will be given an overview of the project and the review process. The public will also have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comment.

School of Law lecture: ‘Using the Concept of Legal Culture’

Visiting professor David Nelken presents from his paper titled “Using the Concept of Legal Culture” on Wednesday, September 2. Lunch will be served at 12 p.m. in the faculty conference room, G480, on the fourth-floor of the School of Law library. iPhone Development Group meeting

The first fall meetup of the iPhone Development Group at UM is set for Wednesday, September 2 from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Memorial Classroom Building, Room 118. Anyone interested or involved in iPhone or iPod Touch programming is invited. Attend a demo of the ScreenSplitr app for the iPhone combined with the DemoGod app for Macintosh, which enables users to preview an iPhone screen on a Mac monitor. There will also be a walk-through of how to set up and install an app on an iPhone rather than just using the iPhone simulator.

School of Architecture hosts Miami Beach Pier Museum: An International Competition panel discussion and exhibit

Attend the Miami Beach Pier Museum: An International Competition, a panel discussion, exhibition, and reception beginning on Wednesday, September 2 from 6  to 8 p.m. in the Jorge M. Perez Architecture Center. Organized by Arquitectum, the international architectural competition firm based in Lima, Peru, and hosted by the UM School of Architecture, the opening exhibition of winners and selected entries and the panel discussion of jurors are the final phase of a contest resulting in 417 project submissions from countries around the world. For this competition, the project brief requested designs for a pier museum located on the beach at the end of Fifth Street in South Beach.

Competition jurors include: Jean-Francois Lejeune, director of graduate studies at the School of Architecture; Rocco Ceo, director of undergraduate studies for the School of Architecture; Rene Gonzalez, Rene Gonzalez Architect, Miami; Zeuler Lima, architect and faculty member at Washington University, St. Louis; and Chad Oppenheim, Oppenheim Architecture + Design, Miami.

The exhibition will remain open Monday through Friday during regular business hours through September 18.
