Cloud 9 is the groundbreaking and lyrical story of a 67-year-old married woman who rediscovers passion and her sexuality when she falls in love with a 76-year-old man. The film is a raw, intimate, and emotional look at romance for the superannuated, featuring taboo-breaking insight into the sex lives of the over 60s crowd. Cloud 9 won an Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and the Best Director and Best Actress prizes at this year’s German Film Awards. The film is in German with English subtitles. Admission is $6 for all University of Miami faculty, staff, and alumni; free for students. General admission is $8. Giacomo Puccini’s immortal opera is brought to life in a feature film version directed by Academy Award nominee Robert Dornhelm, starring the opera world’s “dream team,” soprano Anna Netrebko and tenor Rolando Villazón. The pairing of one of the most beloved operas of all time with one of the world’s most popular operatic couples is a recipe for success. While realism characterizes the set design and costumes, Dornhelm conjures up a dreamlike atmosphere with mixed color and black-and-white flashbacks, evocative fades, and other special effects. Dornhelm focuses entirely on his stars, Netrebko and Villazón, whose incredible presence carries the film along. Because of the special nature of this opera engagement, all tickets for La Boheme are $12. The film is in Italian with English subtitles. It screens on Friday, September 25 at 9 p.m.; Saturday, September 26 at 1:30 and 5:45 p.m.; and Sunday, September 27 at 3:45 p.m. For more information visit www.cosfordcinema.com.
