Cosford screening: ‘Hidden Scars’

Sep
28
7:00 pm

The Center for Latin American Studies presents Hidden Scars, a film that tells the story of a Maya Indian who was kidnapped from his neighborhood in Guatemala City, falsely accused as a guerrilla spy, tortured for days, then left for dead on a roadside. Shattered and alone, he makes his way north to Los Angeles, where he seeks political asylum and relief from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. This documentary adds a human face to the current discussion of the effectiveness or futility of torture used as a political tool. A discussion of the film will follow with director Grace Barnes; John Lantigua of the Palm Beach Post; and Jose Flores, a student in International Studies. The film screens on Monday, September 28 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.cosfordcinema.com.
