An Autograph Worth Collecting

Alex Fernandez, who won more than 100 games as a Major League pitcher, signs autographs as employees queue up to meet the former big league hurler.

University of Miami employees who are diehard baseball fans got the chance to experience one of the sport’s most popular events—an autograph session with one of the local legends of the game—when former Miami Hurricanes and Florida Marlins pitcher Alex Fernandez signed baseball cards, hats, T-shirts, balls, and whatever else was on hand as part of a ticket distribution outing for the upcoming UM Family Night with the Marlins. Fernandez, who was born in Miami Beach and pitched for the Hurricanes baseball team in the late 1980s, is a member of the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame. UM Family Night with the Marlins is Saturday, April 23 at Sun Life Stadium.
